It's possible, but it'll require a lot of time. The thing with language is that the more you use it, the better you get at it. When people say that you can't learn it well enough to converse with natives within a couple years, they're deriving that from their personal experience and how much time it took them to learn it.
The problem with this is that everyone puts in a different amounts of effort; some will only put in a few hours a day a couple days a week and generally those people will tell you it'll take you 4-6 years easy to learn it, and they're right…but that's a weak amount of effort IMHO. But for someone like myself, who is absorbed in Japanese for a good 5+ hours a day (I make the time because I know I have it and most people do), just doing SOMETHING Japanese, be it watching movies, or listening to music, watching shows on Youtube, playing games in Japanese, thinking in Japanese, or sometimes a combination of those things, I'm constantly learning stuff. In the last month alone I have learned more than double what I learned in my last 3 failed attempts at the language.
As for kanji, I learn around 20 a day because I have a bad memory–wish I could go as high as 50 but 20 seems to be my limit. Use the Remembering the Kanji books by Heisig. You'll learn how to write the kanji and what it means first and then go back and learn the readings, which I find pointless to learn at all but saying that will give me a negative rating of 10 for this answer. I would suggest going to my source if you're really interested in learning the language fast and fun.

Wall Street Journal By Katherine Boehret March 17, 2010 In the same way cellphone address books helped people stop memorizing phone numbers, the magic of auto-complete helped them stop memorizing email addresses. This feature, which is built into most email programs, lets users type as few as one or two letters before seeing and selecting from a list of addresses that may or may not be saved in the email program’s address book. Too bad auto-complete on your mobile device doesn’t work the same way. On mobile devices, the suggested names in the “To” line only include those of contacts that are saved in a device’s digital address book. This leaves people stuck mid-thumb, trying to remember an email address, or worse, being forced to wait until they return to their desks to send a message. This week, I tested an app that generates contact information for every person a user has ever communicated with in Microsoft Outlook—or if Outlook isn’t a factor, just with the device. I tested Xobni…
